Better Late Than Never! – September Goals

Okay, so from now on I’m going to do monthly goals and totals to keep better track of the incoming and outgoing, so let’s begin!

  • Shopping – $650
  • Entertainment – $0
  • Emergency Fund – $462.65
  • Gym – x 8

So my goals are to cut our shopping budget and have some surplus which will go to the EF. Normally a month would be $800, but I’m going try to get it down to $650. I don’t want to spend any month on entertainment this month, we have done heaps lately. Our EF is down due to the dentist and a couple of other small things, it needs a bit to be topped up, and I will top it up by the end of the month. I will get us back on track…I know I can do this! I was doing so well, and I can do even better. I can I can I CAN!

Op Shopping (Part 2) – I Did It!

Well I did it! This morning I ventured out to the Op Shops with my list in hand! I even had a pen so I could cross things off as I went to avoid doubling up (I may have looked weird, but I don’t care). The first shop I hit was Savers. I must say, it is a fantastic Op Shop. Not only to they have HEAPS of clothing, it’s so organised. Everything is in order, sizes, types of clothing etc, it makes it so easy. I got almost everything I needed there, I left there needed 1 leggings, 2 track pants, 2 hats, 2 nice tops, and 3 pjs! So I think that’s pretty good. I then went to the Salvo’s, followed by Vinnies…both of which were highly disappointing. The clothing was all over the place, it was so disorganised, plus the quality is bad, it was like they just put up anything that was donated, whether it had holes/stains in/on it or not. I ended up leaving both stores with nothing. So then I ventured to the shopping centre, I only had two hours to do all this, and was going well for time. I was going to go to Kmart, but Best n Less was closer, I popped in there first, which was a good idea! I got the 2 track pants I needed on sale for $2.98! That is cheaper than at the op shop. Bonus! I left Best n Less needed 2 leggings, 1 hat, and 3 pjs. So I went to Target, I cancelled the lay by, and got the rest of the things. I know that I got some of what I needed new, but I personally don’t think that is bad. I got almost all of it 2nd hand, I think it is nice for them to have some nice things, and I’d prefer them to have new hats, plus pjs. I must add, I did get DD2 an extra skirt and DD1 an extra cardi, both of which were from Savers. So here at the totals:

  • Savers: $53.44
  • Best n Less: $61.96
  • Target: $60.55

Total: $175.95

Now that is much better than the lay by I had at Target for $328. I know it may seem like a lot to some people, but I think $175 for two kids, for two seasons, with two full wardrobes is pretty good. I am happy with it. I don’t feel guilty at all, like I would have if I had payed for the lay by. They now have everything they need for two seasons, and DD2 can now move into the next size, as she is out growing her current sized clothes. Oh and I was really pleased with one purchase. I had on lay by a pair of hot pink denim shorts for DD1, I found the exact same pair at Savers. At Target they were $16, at Savers they were $3.99! Of course they are a little faded, but they are still the exact same shorts. I think I have done a good job for my first Season of shopping. I don’t have to worry about it again now until Winter, and maybe then I will do even better. I know they can get by with a little less clothes (believe me, the current list is heaps less than I’d normally buy), I do like my little girls to look like little girls, and now they can with their super cute 2nd hand outfits! No one will really know, and my budget is the better for it! If I can do this, anyone can!

Hitting The Shops – Op Shops That Is!

Spring is here, and Summer is right behind it. I think this Summer is going to be a really hot one this year. So I have been putting of the girls Summer wardrobe as long as I can. I have been letting things slip lately, and getting slack with money, which is half because I havent been well, and half laziness. Yesterday I knew Target’s daily deal was 20% off kids clothes. So off course the old me thought oh that will be the best way to do it. Off I went, with a rough idea of what I thought they needed, thought I did a “great” job, went to the lay by counter, and it came to $328.00!!! Omg…that is HEAPS! Our clothing budget is $1000 for the year, for all four of us! I felt sick about it, and I knew it was wrong. So I made the time, and went through both of their wardrobes today. With a list in hand of what they needed, I marked off what they already had, and what hand me downs I had for DD2. It turns out I over bought HEAPS! This is what they will need for the Spring/Summer season:

Both Girls:

  • 7 Tshirts
  • 2 Nice tops
  • 2 Shorts
  • 3 Leggings
  • 2 Dresses
  • 1 Cardi
  • 2 3/4 Pants
  • 2 Skirts
  • 1 Hat

DD2 extra:

  • 3 Pjs
  • 2 Tracksuit pants
  • 1 Jacket

DD2 is growing so needs extra trackies, and has outgrown her jackets, plus she has no summer pjs.

Okay so this is what they need after I went through their wardrobes:

DD1:

  • 0 Tshirts
  • 1 Nice tops
  • 2 Shorts
  • 0 Leggings
  • 0 Dresses
  • 0 Cardi
  • 0 3/4 Pants
  • 1 Skirt
  • 1 Hat

DD2:

  • 5 Tshirts
  • 1 Nice top
  • 2 Shorts
  • 2 Leggings
  • 0 Dresses
  • 1 Cardi
  • 0 3/4 Pants
  • 2 Skirts
  • 3 Pjs
  • 2 Trackpants
  • 1 Hat

So even though DD2 does need a few more things than DD1, I still over estimated by A LOT! I should know better by now! So I am cancelling that lay by, and going to some Op-Shops tomorrow with my list of what they need, and will buying as much as I can 2nd hand. Whatever I can’t get, I will get from good old Kmart! This is new for me. I go to Op-Shops and all, but I don’t ever buy an entire wardrobe there! I know I can do it, it should be fun. I will update with how I go.

I’m really happy with shopping this week! I’m going to do it differently and put down our fortnightly budget, as that is what goes in the envelope, so fortnight we have $400, which should work out to $200 a week, give or take, this way I can keep account of what is left.

  • Sunday: Lasagna with Vegetables
  • Monday:Date Night!!
  • Tuesday: Spagetti Bolagnaise
  • Wednesday: Left Overs – Spagetti Bolagnaise
  • Thursday: Fish, Wedges and Vegetables
  • Friday: Pasta Shapes & Toast

Busy Week – Plugging Away At It!

It has been a crazy week! I was sick late last week with a stomach bug or something, and had two days off work. DH had a virus, and had a day off work. This week a lot of people are away from being sick, so everyday I have been doing different jobs to cover for absences, it has been crazy! I am so tired, and I still don’t feel very good. My boss has asked me twice to stay back to do overtime, the first time I couldn’t, but today I stayed back for 30 mins, it’s all I could manage, I have been up since 4am. Normally I’d jump at overtime, I just haven’t been well. I had some blood tests yesterday, I have to get B12 Injections every 12 weeks, and was a few weeks late with my last one, since getting it I feel the same, so my Dr wants to make sure my levels are ok. I am working overtime on Sunday, it will make up for my two days off last week (which was unpaid sick leave booo).

I am going to write monthly goals instead of weekly. I think it will be easy to manage that way, plus I can see the figure in full of what we should spend, and then what we did spend.

I have to confess, I have been using the dryer again, which bothers me more because the weather has actually been nice! I have been so busy, exhausted and just un organised. Today when we got home from work, I did nothing but clean for an hour, the house isn’t as clean as Id like (I have high standards), and it has started to bug me. It’s almost 6pm and I’ll be going to bed shortly, because I feel so sick in my stomach.

Oh oh, some good news, DH went to our bank, and it looks like we have been approved to transfer our car loan to them from our current lender. It will save $50 a month in interest, so it’s great, every little but helps!

I’ll make sure I put the monthly goals up tomorrow, for now though, I need to lay down, because tomorrow is another money-making day at work, and I need my energy!

Off The Rails – Not What I Planned

This week just isn’t going to plan! I had today off, and went home early yesterday due to a stomach bag. I literally spent all day in bed today. As I don’t get sick pay, I’m down 10.5 hours for the next payday. Plus I’ve used the dryer and heater this week…I’m feeling pretty deflated actually. I guess there’s always next week!

Taking A Break From The Snowballs – Murphy Is Here

I’m feeling really out of control…well more like things I can’t control are out of control. I had to go to the dentist yesterday, I hadn’t planned on needed to go, I really try to avoid the dentist as much as possible, not just due to cost but due to FEAR! DH goes to the dentist a lot, he needs a lot of work done, so I’ve always put myself last in an effort to get his done, but I couldn’t ignore a cavity I had any longer, it really hurt. So off I went, I had a panic attack in the waiting room, but actually made it to the chair. I found out I had two cavities, two teeth next to each other both needed fillings, and a filling in between. The bonus of that was it was only one needle, so less expensive. Getting two fillings, and a x-ray cost $420…crap. Luckily I have my emergency fund, but this took just under of my fund! I also found out the filling around a root canal I had done is falling apart so I need that fixed, and I need two other fillings reconstructed, plus 3 more x-rays! Getting all that will total $770! Crap crap crap. That’s not all, DH has been waiting a while to get the rest of his teeth fixed, he needs about 4 fillings, which will cost around what mine will, plus he had a root canal done 1.5 years ago, and it has a temporary filling and band on it, which was supposed to last 6 months…and yeah it’s been 1.5 years! Getting that crown is $1000. I can’t put these things off, I really can’t, especially because if we ignore them, we will only just need root canals or teeth removal. I guess that is the hard part, I don’t want to spend money, I want to pay off stuff, but there are just going to be some things that I can’t ignore, things we just have to do. So for now my focus will have to be getting the emergency fund back up to $1000, then getting my teeth fixed, followed by DH. It just has to be done, but that means for now our snowballs are on hold. I hate typing that. Grrr. I think with me working my full hours, DH working overtime and trying to do as much as we can from our home business, we should be able to get this out of the way quickly and get back on track.

In other news, the car went in for a service today! Thank goodness for our car maintance budget! It ended up costing $610, it needed x2 services, as we had skipped the last one, so it had heaps of stuff done to it. Wow it drives so nice now! I can’t believe the difference, plus they detailed it, bonus! So anyway, I paid for that in full from our maintaince money, it was so cool knowing that I could just pay cash for it without it effecting us in anyway!

The property rates came the other day, my budget for that was $1300, and it was just on $1200 which was a nice suprise, I mean it’s only $100 less, but it’s better to be under than over! You can pay it in installments or in full in Febuaray which is the way I had set it up, so I’ll be paying it next year in full, with cash, yeah!

The water bill just came, and is bigger than usual because our yearly parks fee was charge. I off course have money for it in the budget, but will be $60 short on this bill due to the fee, damn it! I guess it could be worse.

Ugh…it really feels shitty right now. I know we will get through this and go straight back to the Snowballs, but why can’t it be just a bit easier?

Weekly Goals – Week 4

Week 3 Goals:

  • Don’t use heater
  • Don’t use dryer
  • Spend Freeze Week
  • Go to the gym at least once!

Okay this week was a bit of a fail. I actually forgot I said it was a spending freeze! What! Doh…oh well. I got so busy, forgot lunch a few times, and well…I spent extra money on food. I didn’t go to the gym at all, once again…Ughh, when will I get this together! The gym isn’t going to be on my list for the coming week.

Week 4 Goals:

  • Don’t use heater
  • Don’t use dryer
  • Try to blog every 2nd day
  • No take away

I will not be buying take away this week. Monday night is our date night, and we will be going out for dinner, which I don’t class as take away, but it is in our budget (the date night). We will eat everything on our menu! I really want to blog more, it really helps me keep on track. So that’s the goals this week! I’m confident I can stick to these ones! Haha!

Weekly Menu & Shopping – Week 6

I’m late, I’m so late! Ahh I’ve been behind on everything this week, I only just balanced all my accounts! I worked some overtime today which is great, but we have just been flat out at work for weeks! It’s a good thing, but it kind of sucks at the same time. Anyway, let’s start with our weekly menu!

Dinners:

  • Saturday: Roast Chicken & Vegetables
  • Sunday: Roast Chicken, Pineapple, Onion & Avocado Sandwiches
  • Monday: DATE NIGHT
  • Tuesday: Beef & Vegetable Stir Fry with Noodles
  • Wednesday: Left Overs – Beef Stir Fry
  • Thursday: Fish, Wedges & Vegetables
  • Friday: Baked Beans & Toast

Lunches:

  • Saturday: Mini Muffin Pizzas
  • Sunday: Sandwiches & Fruit
  • Monday: Coles Frozen Meal
  • Tuesday: Coles Frozen Meal
  • Wednesday: Coles Frozen Meal
  • Thursday: Coles Frozen Meal
  • Friday: Coles Frozen Meal

Budget for Shopping: $200

Total shopping – $196.88

Left over: $3.12

Okay so this week we were only just under budget, but under budget none the less! We are having frozen meals for our lunches this week, they were $3.50 each, and because we have been so busy, we got slack last week, and forgot our lunches twice, which lead to us getting lunch from the lunch truck…whoops! So $3.50 is pretty good each I think. This weeks shopping is what we call our ‘extravagant’ week. We stock up on a lot of things, including healthy snacks for the kids, and were having meat a few times this week. I know it’s good that I’m under budget, but I think we could of done much better…I need to get my ass back into hear!
